With all we have going on these days, we could all use an energy boost once and a while right? I know I have my moments when they’re more than welcome. Especially with three energetic little kids around!
Of course it’s an option to power through, and most of us do just this. Wouldn’t it be nice though to have some tricks up your sleeve to energise yourself when YOU want a boost?
This is exactly why I’m writing this blog, to share my favourite energising tips with you! And the best thing? They’re free and only take a few minutes. Handy for us busy moms right?!
Here are my 4 favourite ways to increase your energy!
1. Take a cold shower
This didn’t used to be my favorite, but I have to say, it’s grown on me. Simply because it does the trick! I do this one pretty much every day and literally say to myself (when in the warm shower) that it’s time for my “morning cup of coffee!” There’s actually a whole science behind how amazingly good showering, or at least rinsing off with cold water is for you. It’s called hormesis, which (in very simple terms) comes down to applying small amounts of stressful or harmful agents to create a beneficial change. In this case, cold water is the hormetic agent. The cold water shocks your body awake, stimulates deeper breathing (which increases oxygen levels in your blood) and will give you an energy kick for sure!
I got so into this line of thinking that I went so far as to do a full-day cold-training which ended in an ice-bath! Amazing experience!
2. Take a 30 second dance break
Put on your favourite jam or happy number (at high volume) and let loose. Music can boost your (athletic) performance, your mood and even your brain’s pleasure center! Inspired by an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, this one is my all-time fave. Whether it’s a yourself, your partner, a friend or your kid who is stuck in an energy rut or just in a funk…it’s time to dance! Lacking inspiration for awesome songs to dance to?

3. Laugh
Laughing triggers the release of endorphins (happy-hormones) & so many studies have shown that it’s just plain good for you! And yet we laugh (genuinely) less and less. So let’s change that and boost our own moods to boot! Check out your favourite comedian or YouTube film of animals doing ridiculous things. Whatever gets your happy face going on! 4. Get outside
The effect of nature is so powerful on us, that you don’t even have to literally go outside. Just looking at pictures of beautiful nature can help improve your mood and energy levels. Of course the extra boost from the higher levels of oxygen outside also influence your seretonin levels which help you feel more relaxed and happier.
Not to mention when you are outside, there’s usually some sort of movement involved, which also gets your blood pumping. So, even if it’s raining or windy or you don’t “feel like it” (me this morning), get up and get out for a few minutes. Even if it’s just to run around the block. It’ll feel great afterwards and your energy will be higher too!
